The Loyalty Scheme Your Boiler Engineer Joined Before You Even Called Them

The quote arrives and there it is in bold: ten-year warranty. It sounds like a gift – a decade of peace of mind, handed over just for choosing wisely. What the quote doesn't mention is that the warranty was designed mainly to solve a problem you weren't involved in.

What the Engineer Actually Paid For

Most engineers need to become accredited installers with that specific manufacturer to offer a ten-year warranty. This means that they will have completed brand-specific training courses (sometimes subsidised by the manufacturer and sometimes not) and will have taken on annual renewals and ongoing obligations. This is a real investment, and their name would not even appear on the manufacturer's job sheet before they had completed all of it.

So it makes perfect business sense for an engineer to do this. But it means that when your engineer says "I'd go with this one," they're giving you the view of someone who has already committed to that answer. Not dishonestly, just structurally. The engineer signs up to the franchise before he even talks to a customer about what he would recommend.

The Price Nobody Quotes You

Most homeowners rely on the list price published by the manufacturer (which can be anywhere between £800 and £2,500 depending on the model), but the trade price paid by the accredited installer is so much lower, and this margin is used to fund the loyalty architecture of better margins for the brand’s friends.

The figure on the quote has already been marked up by the merchant’s margin and the installer’s markup – written by people who all have a financial interest in the brand’s continued endorsement by the installer.

The Clause That Locks the Door Behind You

Most 10-year warranties require annual servicing to remain valid. It makes sense that boilers require servicing but the impact is that you’re locked into a decade-long relationship with a particular system. A single missed service could invalidate the warranty.

The engineer recommended this model of boiler, which requires yearly visits from this customer. This is a ‘franchise’ when you follow the money down. And, as with most franchises, it appears to be good for the people that created it and not so good for the people that are stuck in the middle.

Is a ten-year warranty worth having?

Yes – in roughly the way a loyalty card at a coffee shop is worth having. The protection is real and you should claim it. Just go in knowing what it cost to create.

Can I get a boiler serviced by someone other than the original installer?

Any Gas Safe registered engineer can service a boiler, and for most manufacturers that's sufficient to keep the warranty valid. Check your warranty terms before assuming you're locked to one firm.

Can I ask my engineer which brands they're not accredited with?

Yes, this is one of the most useful questions to ask a potential supplier. If they have accreditation with two or three brands then their honest views on these will probably be solid. However, be cautious of recommendations that are given for general reasons such as “reliability”, “parts availability” etc., with no comment on systems that they have less knowledge of.

Are some brands genuinely better, or is it all loyalty architecture?

Both things are true at once. Some brands do have better reliability records and better parts availability than others. The point isn't that the recommendation is wrong – it's that it was never brand-agnostic, and you'll make a better decision knowing that.

What happens to my warranty if I change engineers halfway through?

The warranty is tied to the boiler and the address, not to the installer. As long as annual services are carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer and documented correctly, it should stay intact – but read the small print, because some manufacturers do specify accredited installers only.

FAQ

Is a ten-year boiler warranty worth having?

As with a loyalty card from a coffee shop, a 10-year warranty is worth having. Most 10-year warranties are written with the installer’s accreditation with the manufacturer in mind and most require annual servicing to remain valid.

Can someone other than the original installer service my boiler?

Any Gas Safe registered engineer can service your boiler and most manufacturers will continue to offer warranty protection. However, there are a few manufacturers who will only continue to offer warranty protection if the boiler is serviced by an accredited installer. Check your terms and conditions for your boiler and warranty. It’s also a good idea to keep a record of when your boiler has been serviced.

Why does my boiler engineer recommend one particular brand?

Most engineers become accredited installers for a manufacturer in order to offer a ten-year warranty. This involves brand-specific training, annual renewals and ongoing obligations to become and remain an accredited installer for that brand. This means that by the time an engineer recommends a particular boiler model, they will have already committed to that brand. It isn’t dishonest, but the advice is never fully brand-agnostic.

What should I ask an engineer about the brands they fit?

Ask which brands they are not an accredited installer for. If they are an accredited installer for 2 or 3 brands, then they will generally be good on those brands. Be wary of general reasons for recommending boilers such as reliability or availability of spare parts, as these do not relate to systems that the installer may not have as much knowledge of.
